The Role

The Highlands Program is a five-week residential experiential learning program for the Year 9 students from Tanglin Trust School. It plays a significant part in the holistic development of the students by providing a Rite of Passage experience that focusses on developing curiosity, confidence and community in each teenager. 

Purpose of the role

  • The position of Boarding House Supervisor is one of significant importance and responsibility.
  • The Boarding House Supervisor role supports the Leadership Team to create a safe and caring atmosphere throughout the Campus.
  • Working under the direction of the Office Manager, the Boarding House Supervisor is required to play a key role in the residential program on a day-to-day basis, with particular responsibility for the physical, social and emotional well-being of the students.
  • The objective of the Boarding House Supervisor is to take the lead in establishing a ‘home away from home’ environment in which students feel safe, cared for and happy.
  • Understands the importance of helping young people develop independence, resilience and practical life skills within a structured boarding environment.

This is a casual employment, full-time (38 hours per week) on a rotating roster that includes weekends and evenings for four groups per year that last six weeks each.

Job Responsibilities

Overall Responsibilities

  • Establishing and maintaining a high standard of care, facilities, routines and practices in the dormitories and common room.
  • Overall responsibility for assisting students with the laundering of their personal clothes.
  • Assisting students with changing linen, making beds and keeping dorm rooms tidy.
  • Maintaining the student laundry to ensure it is functional, appropriately stocked and well presented.
  • Facilitating and contributing to the various routines of the campus which seek to promote and build responsibility and ‘life skills’ in students.
  • Manage the campus’s linen to ensure quantity and quality is appropriate for student needs.
  • Teach and encourage practical ‘life skills’ to students around personal care, hygiene and living in community.
  • Encourage high standards of dress, cleanliness and tidiness in students.
  • Demonstrate a caring attitude in line with understanding of the principles of confidentiality and information sharing, so that matters can be dealt with as they arise while the welfare and happiness of the pupils are ensured.
  • Attend all meals when on duty and assisting with supervision and interacting with students where appropriate.
  • Assist with continuous adult supervision of the pupils. Promote high standards in all aspects of campus life, particularly in student behaviour.
  • Be familiar with the Emergency Management Plan for the campus, including duties assigned to each member of staff.
  • When rostered, perform night-time supervision duties.

Pastoral Care

  • All residential staff members play a vital role in supervising, mentoring, leading and providing pastoral care for students.
  • Establish a rapport with students while maintaining a professional working relationship.
  • Be committed to safeguarding and to promoting the welfare of young people.
  • Develop a culture in which each student can develop their talents and interests to the full while contributing positively to the campus community.
  • Supervising and setting high expectations of standards among the students in the dorms and common room, overseeing their daily lives and encouraging high levels of effort and attainment.
  • Uses positive behaviour management strategies to encourage responsibility, respectful behaviour and positive community living among students.
  • Supports the implementation of campus expectations and behaviour policies in a fair, consistent and supportive manner.
  • Implementing the campus’s behaviour policy effectively to maintain discipline within the dormitory and common room and creating an environment where all forms of bullying and anti-social behaviour are regarded as unacceptable.
  • Liaising with the Leadership Team over matters of significant concern about individual students or groups of students. 

Safeguarding

  • Committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all students through vigilance, professional conduct and adherence to child safety procedures and reporting requirements.
  • Understands the importance of confidentiality, information sharing and timely reporting of concerns in accordance with safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Maintains professional boundaries and contributes to a culture where student wellbeing, safety and respectful behaviour are prioritised at all times.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and understanding of positive behaviour management of students and evidence of effective practice in a range of settings
  • Experience or involvement in a boarding school, camp or a role with pastoral responsibility of teenagers
  • Be aware and up to date in all relevant safeguarding and child safety polices and practice
  • Working knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office programs
  • Working With Children Check (essential)
  • First Aid (HLTAID011)
